Stop-Limit

  • Updated

Additional details

It is important to note that the likelihood of a stop limit order getting filled after it is placed is heavily dependent on how it is set up. Specifically on how much deeper into the book the chosen limit price is than the trigger price. This is particularly important when using a stop limit as a stop loss, because if the order fails to get filled, the position will remain open, potentially leading to extra losses.

Example of order

For example, let’s assume Bitcoin is currently trading with a best bid of $100,000 [2] and a best ask of $100,001 [3]. Our example stop limit order to sell has a trigger price of $100,000 [2]. If the market trends down and the trigger price [2,4] is reached, the stop limit order will be triggered and placed. Where the limit order is placed depends on the limit price chosen when the order was created, and this could be below [6] or above [5] the trigger price. In this example, if the limit price is $99,999, it is more likely to be filled than if the limit price is $100,001.
